NTUA Student Diploma Theses Competition

Some 65 people attended the fifth technical meeting of SNAME Greek Section's 2009-2010 season on January 21, 2010. The meeting was devoted to the annual thesis contest. Four students of the School ofNaval Architecture and Marine Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) presented their diploma theses completed during 2009. Each of these theses was nominated by each of the four divisions of the School. They were as follows (authors in alphabetical order):

1. Athanasios Frangopoulos, "Computational study of water injection strategies in two-stroke marine diesel engines",  nominated by the Marine Engineering division (supervisor:  L. Kaiktsis).

 2. Christos Katsikis, “Seakeeping computations for ships using a non-linear code”,  nominated by the Ship and Marine Hydrodynamics division (supervisor: G.Grigoropoulos).     

 3. Christos Papakonstantinou, "The new IMO convention and its impact on the ship recycling sector", nominated by the Ship Design and Maritime Transport division (supervisor:  H. Psaraftis).

4. Dimitra Rigou, “Experimental analysis of the fractural behaviour of hybrid and reinforced aluminum naval structures with the use of Compact Tension specimens", nominated by the Marine Structures division (supervisor: V. Papazoglou).

All theses were found to be of excellent quality and presented very well. After a .short deliberation of the judging panel, the winner was Athanasios Frangopoulos, receiving the prize of 500 € accompanied by a Certificate. Subscriptions to SNAME were also offered to all finalists.

This year's judging panel was Petros Lalangas, Nikos Dionyssopoulos, Costas Maounis, Antonios Antoniou and John Kokarakis.

Petros Lalangas cut the Section's "Vassilopita" for the New Year, and the lucky coin was won by Zoe Anastasopoulou , an NTUA student and SNAME  member,who received also the traditional Greek Section's remembrance gift, a combined bronze paper weight and magnifying glass.  

A small reception was held, and people congratulated the winner and the finalists for their excellent presentations.
