Meeting Report on Challenges Associated with the DeNOx Equipment to Satisfy MARPOL Annex VI Tier III Regulation 13 presented by Dr. John Kokarakis, Vice President at Bureau Veritas at the Greek Section’s Technical Meeting on October 11th, 2017.

During the Greek Section’s second technical meeting for the 2017-2018season on October 11th, 2017 Dr. John Kokarakis, Vice President at Bureau Veritas, made a presentation on Challenges Associated with the DeNOx Equipment to Satisfy MARPOL Annex VI Tier III Regulation 13.

The Section Chair welcomed SNAME President, Marty Toyen, who honored the section with his presence. The SNAME President welcomed the audience and updated it on SNAME recent changes, current activities and future plans.

Then the speaker took over and started his presentation by discussing the options and equipment needed on-board to comply with Tier III of MARPOL Annex VI Regulation 13. He highlighted that drastic reduction of allowable nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gases can only be achieved by EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) or SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction). The focus of the presentation was on the most promising SCR option, namely the examination of the critical aspects of the installation, hints for equipment selection, degradation mechanisms of the catalyst as well as ways to improve performance. He brought into light that the key aspect of SCR is the need to have a high enough exhaust gas temperature. Otherwise, neither reduction reaction can take place nor formation of ammonium bisulfate ABS can be avoided. He concluded his presentation by presenting some techno-economic data.

A Q&A session succeeded the presentation. The session was concluded with Section Chair’s recognition for his commitment and dedication. A certificate of appreciation was awarded to him for his first year at the office by SNAME President.

During the post-meeting reception attendees had the chance to meet SNAME President, talk to representatives from all segments of maritime industry, discuss and share their ideas.

The meeting was attended by thirty-six (36) members and fifteen (15) non-members and it was broadcast to SNAME members worldwide.
