SOME 2012

The 4th Biennial International Symposium on ‘‘Ship Operations, Management and Economics’’ (SOME), which was organized by the Greek Section of the international Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers (SNAME) and SNAME’s European Regional Office (SERO), took place on November  8 & 9, 2012 in Athens at the Eugenides Foundation auditorium. The symposium was under the auspices of the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping.

 

Some 100 persons were registered for the symposium, but because of public transportation strikes, an average of about 80 persons attended the symposium each day.

 

The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Andreas Chrysostomou, Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) chairman at IMO, on the latest IMO developments and some 25 high-caliber papers were delivered. During the five coffee breaks, the two buffet luncheons and the dinner the attendees from industry, policy-makers and academia had the opportunity to meet and exchange views. All the reports presented were included in a CD, which was given to the attendees and is available for sale by the SERO office.

 

The chairman of the symposium was Prof. Harilaos Psaraftis of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), the chairman of the Greek Section Prof. Apostolos Papanikolaou, the papers committee chairman Assist. Prof. Nikolaos Ventikos of NTUA and the chairman of the organizing committee Petros Lalangas. The papers committee consisted of 22 members from Greece, USA, Japan, United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden & Portugal, who made an excellent selection and review of the papers submitted. Four students from the SNAME NTUA Student Section assisted in the running of the symposium.
