Dear SNAME Students,
Greetings, I’m Doug Rigterink, your new Student Steering Committee Chair. I’m very excited to take over this position and have big plans for the year. Some new things for this year include:
-A Fundamentals of Engineering Exam review program
-A Faculty Advisor of the year award (which also includes a $5,000 scholarship for a student at the winning school)
First off, the FE Exam. If you want to become a licensed engineer in the United States, you have to pass the FE at some point. You can either take it in your last year as an undergrad or while a grad student, or you can take it the day before you take your PE…4 to 5 years from now, once you’ve forgotten how to take a test. It’s your decision, but I would suggest the first option.
Currently, the SSC is working on getting discounts to online prep courses for the FE and making other free study materials available. Now I know this doesn’t apply to everyone, as some schools offer prep classes, but some do not. More information will be coming out about this program shortly, but for now the deadline for registration for the April FE is February 26th.
Second, SNAME has created a Faculty Advisor of the Year Award. Right now, your student section officers should be filing ut a scorecard, grading your Faculty Advisor. These scores will then be used by the SNAME sections to choose the top Faculty Advisor in each region. Finally, the top Faculty Advisor will be chosen. The best part for you is the $5,000 scholarship that is also included in the award. Best of luck to every faculty advisor.
I am looking forward to a great year and would love to hear from any and all of you about what you want to see the SSC do. Find me on the SNAME website and send me a message.
Best Regards and Go Blue!
-Doug Rigterink
