Dear SNAME Students,
Hello, I’m Mark Groden, your new Student Steering Committee (SSC) Chair. I am very excited to take over this position and serve you all this year! Some things the SSC and I will be working toward and look forward to include:
- Implementation of a student-shadowing program
- A student Technical and Research Steering Committee representative
- A greater variety and number of companies at the annual meeting job fair
From a survey sent out to the SNAME student body, we were able to gauge interest on a student-shadowing program. With 95% of the responses indicating interest, the SSC will be working towards implementing such a program this year. SNAME students will have the opportunity to shadow a SNAME professional member for a short period with the potential of having expenses paid by the participating company. The opportunity to spend a week shadowing a SNAME professional will provide invaluable exposure to a specific job or profession, before deciding to devote an entire summer internship to that particular field. This would give younger undergraduate students alternatives to internships, as they are often hard to come by earlier in schooling years.
A student Technical and Research (T&R) committee representative is currently in the process of being selected. This student will serve on the SSC and the T&R steering committee acting as a liaison between the two groups. The student T&R representative will facilitate greater student exposure and participation in the T&R panels. Student participation on the T&R panels gives students the opportunity to work with SNAME technical leaders on their field of interest.
Finally, the SSC is looking to expand the student job fair at the annual meeting. We are expecting to have a significantly greater number of companies in attendance with better forums for industry representative and student interaction.
