SNAME’s European Student Sections – October 2014
By, Peter Noble
One of the SNAME activities that I have enjoyed most in recent years has been working with the students and young professionals. As we all know, this kind of activity is a two-way street. Hopefully, I have been able to impart some knowledge and guidance to those early in their professional life as I, too, have gained immensely from the energy levels and excitement as they embark on their careers.
I was recently able to get involved first-hand with a number of our new student Sections in Europe.
I met with the SNAME student leadership from the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and gave a short talk on “Icebreakers in the Oil Patch” to a joint meeting of KIVI (the Royal Dutch Engineering Society) and the SNAME Western Europe Section. My presentation was followed by one from MARIN, which reported R&D studies on ice loads on propellers at model scale.
I also visited a potential Student Section at the University of Newcastle in the UK and presented a paper on design. The Students are finalizing their by-laws and they already have both a Faculty Advisor and Student leaders.
Before returning to the US, I had a chance to give a technical presentation to the students and faculty at University College London, where we have a strong SNAME Student Section since its inception in mid-2013. We also had 3 students from the University of Southampton join the UCL meeting and discussed the potential for starting another UK Student Section in Southampton.
In between all these Student Section meetings, I had the opportunity to attend the SNAME Western Europe Section UK Symposium, hosted at the ABS London office. We had a robust program with 4 interesting papers largely focused on LNG as fuel. With over 80 members in attendance, including 22 students from Delft, UCL and Strathclyde Sections participating, the Symposium was a real success.
