SMC 2017 is on: We'll see you in Houston. Hurricane Harvey might have brought rain and destruction to the region, but the people of Houston are resilient and are already picking up the pieces. We've spoken with Houston city officials, and we've verified the venue and the airports as we watch the recovery occurring. We're pleased that our host venue, the Hyatt Regency Houston, received no damage at all. So, my dear colleagues, things are moving forward rapidly, as planned. We have on offer the LARGEST PROGRAM in SNAME's history with 5 breakfasts, 13 panels, technical courses, workshops, young professional and student events, and scores of technical ...

The 10 th Annual Apprentice School SNAME Boat Design competition took place at The Mariners’ Museum in the heavy winds on Saturday May 6. The four finalists in this year’s competition were Barracuda (Advanced Technology Center), Nauti Buoys (West Springfield High School), Operation Overboard (Jamestown High School), and Pay-Day (Poquoson High School). We had a new team this year in the race day event - it was West Springfield’s first time as a finalist. We lost Steve Kemp a few days ago to cancer. Steve is well known for his love of ships and the sea, of U Michigan's students, naval architecture, marine engineering, their sports teams, and for raising: Clumber Spaniels Steve was also a professional seafarer and worked on some truly unique projects. He had to withdraw from some of his volunteer activities this last year or so but kept in touch with the staff all along the way letting us know how he was doing and what he was experiencing. We miss your energy and friendship Steve. Steve Kemp Obituary

Remembering Ron Kiss

Yesterday, Anne and I spent the day in Rockville, Maryland attending the funeral, mass, and reception for former SNAME president Ron Kiss with what was easily more than 200 of Ron and his wife June’s friends and family. It was quite an exceptional experience to celebrate Ron’s life with so many people who knew him so very well. His children and grandchildren told wonderful stories about his journey from a young boy fascinated with the water and sailing through school at Webb Institute. Many of his Webb classmates were in attendance to share their experiences and memories of Ron and June. The stories continued to include meeting and eventually marrying ...

Dining out with my wife recently, I noticed something—as I looked around the restaurant I saw other guests with their heads buried in their phones, eyes stuck to a screen and not interacting with those sitting right in front of them. Each of us is guilty of using our phones a little too much, but personal connection is still vital for business and personal fulfillment. The Executive Committee and I have been discussing the value of being a SNAME member, and it occurred to me that at a time when people don’t interact in the way they once did, professional societies like ours are more important than ever before. SNAME is more than just technical content and ...
