EVENT DESCRIPTIONAfter a long hiatus, the SNAME Canadian Atlantic section will return to action! Our guest speaker, Mr. Frans Schouffoer, will introduce Marine Warranty Surveys and offer a presentation on the MWS of CSS Acadia for its tow between Halifax and Shelbourne, Nova Scotia.CSS Acadia is a former Canadian hydrographic surveying and oceanographic research ship. She served Canada for more than 50 years, charting the coastline of almost every part of Eastern Canada including pioneering surveys of Hudson Bay. She was also twice commissioned into the Royal Canadian Navy as HMCS Acadia, the only ship still afloat to have served the RCN in both World Wars. She retired in 1969 and today she is a museum ship, designated as a National Historic Site of Canada, moored in Halifax Harbour at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

The CSS Acadia is a very worthy, valuable old dame but is she seaworthy? That is a very legitimate Question. ABL is a marine surveying company with roots in Marine Warranty Surveys ( MWS) tows of rigs and single voyages. ABL conducted a MWS of the CSS ACADIA for its tow from Halifax to the Shelburne Shipyard for the refit of the vessel. Mr. Schouffoer will introduce ABL Canada, explain marine insurance and Marine Warranty, the role of underwriters, owners, tug operators, and the Surveyor, and discuss 'Seaworthiness' from a technical perspective and a legal perspective in relation to the tow. His presentation will provide examples and a lot of pictures from the CSS ACADIA to explain the MWS process, the findings and results. Spoiler alert: the tow was approved, and the CSS ACADIA returned safely to Halifax!
