    Speaker Bio:

Mike is a senior naval architect and project director who has been with Robert Allan Ltd. for over 15 years. Mike's most recent project highlights include management and design of the full fleet of battery electric harbor tugs and dual fuel LNG escort tugs for HaiSea Marine (including both 2023 and 2024's International Tug & Salvage's "Tug of the Year" recipients HaiSea Wamis and HaiSea Kermode), SAAM Towage Canada's two new battery electric tugs for Vancouver, and most recently a pair of dual-fuel methanol escort/rescue tugs for KOTUG Canada – the latter of which are currently under construction.

With a depth of experience integrating the latest propulsion technologies and alternative fuels into newbuild tugboat designs, Mike brings unique perspective on the opportunities and challenges that each of these options present for operations both locally and abroad.

    Abstract:

The Rapid Evolution of Propulsion in BC's Marine Towage Sector
The last few years have brought transformational changes to BC's tugboat fleets with the entry into service of battery electric harbour tugs, LNG dual fuel escort tugs, and soon also methanol dual fuel escort/rescue tugs for our coast. Now home to International Tug & Salvage's "Tug of the Year" of both 2023 and 2024, BC's marine towage industry has positioned itself as the global leader in the drive to decarbonize towing operations.

Together we will explore some of the most recent and imminent arrivals to both Vancouver and Kitimat, as well as discuss the important achievements and possibilities for airborne emissions, underwater radiated noise, and sustainability that are enabled by the latest propulsion technologies.
