Technical meeting topic: Quantifying and Reducing Underwater Radiated Noise from Tugs and Their Impact on Marine Fauna

Underwater radiated noise (URN) from human activities has been recognized to impact marine fauna, especially cetaceans. In the marine industry, there is increased attention on this topic – as shown by the onset of initiatives such as the ECHO program in British Columbia. Robert Allan Ltd has engaged in some internal projects aimed at quantifying URN levels and their impact on cetaceans. The presentation will showcase the methodology used to assess URN levels and impact metrics on marine mammals, current and future efforts to validate the models used and noise-reducing solutions that can be applied to tugs.
