Since 1975, the Naval Academy Hydromechanics Laboratory (NAHL) has served as the United States Navy’s preeminent educational facility for hands-on towing tank experimentation. Generations of leaders have benefited from interactively learning about ship and submarine design; the fundamental principles of naval architecture; and the intricacies of ship model fabrication and testing. This presentation introduces NAHL’s distinct equipment and instrumentation; provides a brief history of the facility; and focuses on how tow-tank testing continues to support the country’s diverse national security priorities. This presentation also explores new systems, technologies, and experimental techniques that will catalyze the next generation of cutting-edge research at NAHL and other comparable tow-tank facilities.
