THE ROLE OF LOADS IN SHIP STRUCTURAL FAILURES - VIRTUAL EVENT

When:  May 31, 2023 from 03:00 PM to 04:30 PM (ET)

Presented by the SNAME T&R Hydrodynamics, Structures, Ship Design, Ship Production Committees

EVENT DESCRIPTIONShortcomings in load prediction have often played a role in structural failure. In this context load prediction is taken to include the assumptions, either explicit or implicit, made in regard to the design wave climate and the way the ship is operated. In the structural design process these are inputs into load models which are then used to size structure. This webinar will review several ship structure failures in which shortcomings in load prediction played some role. These range for very local failures associated with structural fatigue up to global failures involving the hull girder. As with all failures there are lessons to be learned. Some of these will be discussed. Various methodologies are used to establish loads during design ranging from the entirely prescriptive to the application of advanced fluid dynamics methods. These will be briefly reviewed. The presentation will conclude with an assessment of challenges and uncertainties in load prediction.SPEAKERS/PRESENTERSProf. Ahmed Ibrahim, USNA
