“LNG as a Fuel for the Marine Industry in the Great Lakes & Great Rivers Region”

Starts:  Feb 23, 2012 12:30 PM (AT)
Ends:  Feb 24, 2012 04:00 PM (AT)
Our winter meeting will be an “All LNG” symposium/conference that will address the use of LNG (Liquid Natural Gas) and CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) as a potential fuel for the marine waterways in the Great Lakes Basin. This will be a two-day conference that will begin shortly after the conclusion of the Great Lakes Waterways Conference on Thursday, February 23. Our preliminary agenda is as follows:

Thursday, February 23, 1430-1630 (approx)
An introduction to LNG and CNG, moderated by Gary Van Tassel, with participation by Bob Kamb (Clean Energy Fuels). This session is intended to be an introductory/educational forum for SNAME members and other participants, with numerous opportunities for questions and answers by attendees.

Thursday, February 23, 1800-2000
SNAME-hosted reception at the Hyatt Regency at the Arcade

Friday, February 24, 0730-0830
SNAME-sponsored continental breakfast

Friday, February 24, 0830-1230
Dr. Mike Parsons (Professor Emeritus, University of Michigan) will present a paper "Converson of the U.S. Great Lakes Steam Bulk Carriers to LNG Propulsion - Initial Report" on the feasibility of converting the remaining Great Lakes steamship bulk carriers to LNG fuel.
Note: The following speakers will be grouped into two or more panels which will be finalized as the meeting date approaches, so there is no particular order to the listing:

Chart Industries (manufacturer of cryogenic equipment) will talk about the challenges of manufacturing tanks for storing or transporting LNG and CNG.

John Thompson (DTE Energy) will talk about the availability and distribution of CNG in Michigan, and also address the issue of “safety in the gas train” (how the safety of the entire system, from tanks to burners, is addressed on shore-based systems).

Ivar Flusund, Technical Manager Rolls-Royce Marine-Aalesund, Norway, and Odd Magne Horgen, General Sales Manager Rolls Royce Marine-Bergen, Norway, will discuss Rolls Royce’s experiences with applications of lean burn LNG propulsion and auxiliary engines and systems in a variety of vessel designs world-wide.

Bob Kamb (Clean Energy Fuels) will discuss what is realistically possible in the near term for the Great Lakes as far as the use of LNG and CNG.
Ken Westcar (Toromont CAT) will discuss his company’s experience working with LNG-fueled engines.

Peter Jacobs (Wartsila) will talk about LNG bunkering and storage, automation, dual fuel engine technology, and the potential cost savings with LNG as a fuel.

Stephen Gumpel (ABS – Vice President for Business Development) will discuss the role of ABS in the development of LNG and CNG as a fuel in the marine industry
