Development of Metal Additive Manufacturing Technology Capabilities in Naval Shipbuilding

Dr. Ralls will provide a presentation relating to the development of Metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) in Naval Shipbuilding. His presentation will focus on two main areas: the qualification of a stainless steel AM part and the utilization of AM at NNS. This presentation will highlight the AM qualification journey performed for a 316L-AM material, discuss process capability considerations, highlight AM design and build considerations, and briefly discuss material test result examples. Additionally, several examples of AM focus areas for shipyards will be discussed ranging from rapid prototyping to new design potential.

Speaker Name and Bio
Dr. John W. Ralls is a Manager Principal Engineer 3/Deputy Chief Engineer – Additive Manufacturing with Newport News Shipbuilding. He currently serves as the engineering lead for NNS’s deployment efforts in the area of additive manufacturing (AM). He leads a team of personnel focused on the evaluation of AM technologies, AM material qualification and tests, inspection of AM material, industrial applications of AM, and other AM related design and material evaluations. His past work experience includes ship systems design for numerous shipboard systems along with component development leadership for more than 30 engineered and developed components. Dr. Ralls is Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve and holds a USCG 3 A/E Unlimited Horsepower License. He is an active member and volunteer in his church and also volunteers with the Peninsula Engineering Council. He has more than half a dozen current or pending US or foreign patents and is also a licensed professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
