Offshore Wind Energy: It's Pivotal Role and the Challenges it Faces - IN-PERSON EVENT

When:  Dec 4, 2024 from 06:00 PM to 08:00 PM (ET)
Associated with  Hampton Roads Section

EVENT DESCRIPTION
Offshore wind energy is a rapidly growing sector that harnesses the power of wind turbines installed in marine environments (predominately off the mid-Atlantic on the Continental Shelf) to generate clean, renewable electricity. This innovative technology offers numerous benefits, including substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and enhanced energy security. Offshore wind projects can capitalize on stronger and more consistent winds found at sea, leading to higher energy output compared to onshore facilities. As countries strive to meet ambitious climate targets, offshore wind is increasingly seen as a critical component of energy transition strategies, providing opportunities for job creation, economic development, and advancements in technology and infrastructure. With ongoing investments and supportive regulatory frameworks, offshore wind is poised to play a pivotal role in achieving a sustainable energy future. However, numerous challenges exist with this growing industry, creating unique risks. This presentation will walk the audience through the basics of offshore wind, the primary obstacles that currently inhibit its development and what is next on the horizon for the industry.
