A Comparison of Small Craft and Ship Stability

When:  Nov 30, 2022 from 06:00 PM to 08:00 PM (ET)
Associated with  Hampton Roads Section
This presentation will provide an overview of some key differences between stability standards for small and large vessels. With an abundance of stability standards available, it is imperative to understand the appropriate applications for each. Certain standards are better suited for certain vessel types and lengths, and if a boat is assessed against an inappropriate standard, the results hold less value. This presentation will focus on the differences between the following standards: USCG Subchapter T, DPC (Design Practices and Criteria for U.S. Navy Ship Surface Ship Stability and Reserve Buoyancy), ISO 12217-1, and USN 6660-99. Some key points of comparison are the treatment of windage area, the definition of downflooding points, and the requirements for damaged stability.
