EVENT DESCRIPTION
Survivability against shock is a fundamental consideration in the design, development, and qualification of USN surface ships. A ship’s ability to withstand and recover from the effects of an UNDEX depends not only on the strength and resilience of its hull and structure, but also on the dynamic interaction of equipment, foundations, machinery, piping, Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical (HM&E) systems, and combat systems throughout the ship. As a result, shock survivability must be approached as a ship-wide design discipline, extending from early structural architecture and equipment selection through shock analysis, modeling, laboratory qualification, system-level testing, and ultimately full-scale shock testing at sea.
This presentation will provide an overview of the USN shock discipline from a ship design, test and evaluation, and survivability perspective, with particular emphasis on the objectives and challenges of Full Ship Shock Trials (FSST).

Allison Vella
Allison Vella is the Director of Navy Labs at Leidos Gibbs & Cox. She has spent over 16 years supporting surface ship survivability, specializing in underwater explosions resulting in high impact shock. She was onboard the USS Gerald R Ford (CVN 78) during Full Ship Shock Trials back in 2021 and supported the shock trials performed this summer on USS Ted Stevens (DDG 128). Her presentation will focus on the objectives of Full Ship Shock Trials and the range of efforts required getting a ship ready to effectively, and intentionally be...blown up.
