Lilac Preservation Project Tour - IN-PERSON EVENT

When:  Mar 25, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 02:00 PM (ET)
Associated with  New York Metropolitan Section

EVENT DESCRIPTION

The kind folks at the Lilac Preservation Project have offered to give us a guided tour of their effort to restore the Lilac, a retired Coast Guard cutter and lighthouse/buoy tender. USCGC Lilac is America's only surviving steam-powered lighthouse tender.

The Lilac is currently at her winter berth at Caddell's Dry Dock in Staten Island. During the event, our guides will provide historical and technical perspective as we make a thorough tour of the vessel. If time permits, we may also be able to check out some of the other vessels at the yard.

The event will conclude with a catered lunch served in the CPO mess and wardroom. If the weather permits we may also eat out on the main deck. The Preservation Project is looking for volunteers and will provide information on ways you may be able to help (if you are interested). There is a temporary (paid) ship supervisor position available soon, for which details will be provided.

Although this is a student and young professional event, it is open to all members of the New York Metropolitan SNAME section. Due to space constraints, the tour will be limited to the first 30 members to register.

REQUIREMENTS:

All visitors are requested to carry their own hard hats. If any visitor does not / cannot carry their own, the Preservation Project may provide a limited number of hard hats.

You must register for the event through SNAME.

TRANSPORTATION:

The S40 bus from the Staten Island Ferry terminal departs from Ramp D and stops right outside the shipyard on the corner of Broadway. There is parking available. We will gather in the parking lot before starting the tour.
