Floating Wind – Successes, Challenges and Opportunities

When:  Sep 30, 2021 from 12:00 PM to 01:00 PM (CT)

Presented by the Texas Section

Energy transition is happening, and the shift away from fossil fuels presents us all with interesting challenges and unprecedented opportunities.

The targets set by the Biden-Harris administration, to install 30 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind power capacity in U.S. waters by 2030 (nearly the amount that already exists in Europe's two-decade old industry), constitutes an opportunity to strengthen the domestic supply chain and create good-paying jobs. Offshore floating wind is positioned as one of the keystones to meet the desired targets because it has a high potential for scalability given the abundance of the exploited natural resource, the wind, especially in deep waters (>60m) at a vast available maritime space. PPI is a pioneer in this sector, being in the market for several years maturing its technology

The session will present floating wind projects current success case stories, the challenges to deploy industrial scale projects and the opportunities in the nascent booming industry with a comparison to O&G business and contracting models.

SPEAKER/PRESENTER
Thalía Krüger, SNAME Fellow, Naval Architect and Marine Engineer serves as Senior Business Development Manager at Principle Power (www.principlepower.com) responsible for the Americas.

Thalía earned her MSc degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the Gdansk Technical University‘s Shipbuilding Institute. She has a long Marine and Offshore Oil and Gas sectors experience of more than 20 years, honing her technical skills and taking on strategic account management and business development responsibilities. She began her career as a programmer and designer, advancing to the positions of shipyard project engineer, marine inspections chief surveyor, technical superintendent, entrepreneur, principal engineer, project manager, global offshore account manager, and senior marine/offshore consultant.

She has a vast experience in all aspects as a Naval Architect and Marine Engineer, having participated in the full lifecycle of marine and offshore projects from design, engineering through construction, and installation offshore. That experience was enhanced by acquiring insight knowledge about the industry stakeholders’ drives and the interfaces with class societies and regulatory bodies.

Representing professional societies such as SNAME and ASME, she has influenced the industry by organizing high level panel discussions and technical sessions at industry forums (OTC, SNAME Offshore Symposium, SMC) on relevant topics followed by industry actions and publications.

Now, a committed participant in the energy transition, Thalía is focusing her energy and talent on offshore wind energy as part of a group of creative problem-solvers dedicated to providing the most competitive, safe, reliable, and environmentally friendly offshore floating wind solution.

She is an engaging mentor with a passion for the promotion of education specially empowering women in STEM careers, particularly in the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering fields.
