An overview of the wind propulsion systems being developed and deployed in the fleet along with an outline of the USP’s for utilizing these systems. As EEXI and CII considerations rise to the fore, how do these systems and operational approaches help with compliance along with benefits delivered under the EU ‘Fit 55’ framework at an EU level. Exploring the current installation situation and pipeline for wind-assist installations and primary wind newbuilds as well as tracking market forecasts. Finally, looking at how the integration of wind propulsion into the heart of the fleet decarbonisation pathway will deliver substantial savings as a stand-alone technology segment but also will be critical to facilitating the full decarbonisation of the industry.
SPEAKERGavin Allwright is the Secretary-General of the International Windship Association (IWSA). Established in 2014, this grouping of maritime wind propulsion companies and projects supported by ship owners, shipbuilders, class, research institutes, academia, NGO’s and seafarers, is working to promote and facilitate the uptake of wind propulsion solutions in commercial shipping. Alongside his work as association secretary, he also leads the policy work stream, requiring regular attendance at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), where IWSA has consultative status, and he sits on the stakeholders advisory committee for the MTCC network there too. Other policy fora include the European Sustainable Shipping Forum, IRENA’s Coalition for Action, and numerous reference groups and advisory committees focused on decarbonisation in shipping.
Gavin has presented at over 100 international fora, including CMA, SMM & Green Ship Technology along with regularly chairing the Natural Propulsion Seminar as part of Blue Week each year. He was also the coordinator for the ground-breaking ‘Ambition 1.5C: Global Shipping’s Action Plan’ summit at COP23 in Bonn in 2017. His work extends to being a non-executive board member for the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA), a work package leader on the EU Interreg Wind Assist Ship Propulsion (WASP), and advisor on various shipping decarbonisation projects. He is also a regular guest lecturer at the UN World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmo, Sweden among others.
Gavin holds a Masters degree in Sustainable Development, specializing in small-scale sustainable shipping and logistics in developing countries. He has contributed to numerous studies, projects, books, and articles on alternative propulsion solutions and helped coordinate and contributed to the UN-affiliated IRENA technical brief – Renewable Energy Options in Shipping and more recently was an expert reviewer for the IPCC special report on 1.5C climate change.
