Cruise Ship "Costa Concordia" Wreck Removal Project: The Perspective from an Insurance Technical Consultant Presented by the SNAME Western Europe Section
Registration will close end of day January 24, 2022.London Offshore Consultants (LOC) was appointed by the ship’ Owner and their insurers as the technical consultants for the management of the whole project. Aureliano was a Senior Consultant at LOC, and for the first time, will provide a presentation of the challenges faced during all phases of the Costa Concordia wreck removal project and how these were successfully overcome.
The Costa Concordia was launched in 2005, and it was the largest cruise ship 290 metres long with a passenger capacity of 3,780. The Concordia was known for its luxuries: four swimming pools, a casino, top Michelin stars Chef, largest spa on a ship, etc. On 13 January 2012, the cruise ship Costa Concordia with 4,232 people onboard (1,023 crew members and 3,206 passengers) ran aground off Isola Del Giglio kicking off the largest maritime salvage rescue operation in the world. On 17 September 2013, Costa Concordia was brought to a vertical position through a parbuckling procedure. On 23 July 2014, the ship was fully re-floated and commenced its final journey under tow to the Italian scraping yard in Genova. On 7 July 2017, the ship was fully dismantled and scrapped.

Aureliano has applied his expertise across both maritime and oil and gas market sectors.
As a highly experienced Marine Warranty Surveyor, marine and engineering consultancy project manager. He has worked across medium and large offshore oil and gas projects. He provided MWS consultancy for the construction and outfitting of new integration yard in Nigeria. He carried out due diligence inspections and safety evaluations, load out and sail-away inspections on lifting and skidding marine operations.
He has provided extensive ship emergency response by providing naval architectural support to major marine casualties. He has provided consultancy for ship design, stability analysis and ship survey of FPSOs, semi-submersible, tankers, crew ships, ro-ro, bulk carriers, containers and supply vessels.
He has a significant knowledge and experience in providing safety evaluation and risk-based maintenance plans.
Before joining Aqualis Braemar LOC Group in February 2021, Aureliano worked for 7 years as Senior Field Surveyor and plan approval Naval Architect at Lloyd Register where he developed an extensive record of periodical class surveys for any types of ships including offshore platforms inspections.
He was also responsible for the statutory computational plan approval. He was promoted General Manager of Lloyds Register, Taranto District in southern Italy.
