EVENT DESCRIPTION
This presentation entitled ‘Maritime Decarbonization and the Low-to-Zero Carbon Fuel Challenges’ provides a comprehensive overview of biofuels and methanol and their role in global shipping’s journey to reduce its emissions. It highlights the need for shipping to transition to cleaner fuels due to environmental legislation and societal pressure. The presentation introduces biofuels as ‘drop-in’ sustainable alternatives to conventional fossil fuels, detailing their production processes and types. It explains the properties and characteristics of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME), a common biofuel component and discusses the importance of ensuring sustainability and traceability of biofuels. The presentation also covers the advantages and disadvantages of Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils (HVO) and Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) as biofuels, before moving on to similar considerations for methanol. Additionally, it provides guidelines for handling and using biofuels and methanol, highlighting VPS’s knowledge and experiencing of testing these new marine fuels along with valued advice in relation to their fuel handling and management. Further to this the presentation emphasizes the importance of accreditation and quality assessment, concluding by summarizing the benefits these fuels offer in reducing emissions and on-going advancements in low-to-zero carbon fuels technology.

Steve Bee
Steve joined VPS in July 2016 as the Group Commercial Director, a position he held for almost 9 years, before switching to a more marketing-focused role, as the Group Marketing Director in January 2025. Graduating from Northumbria University with a BSc(Hons) in Applied Chemistry, Steve worked as a Research and Development Chemist for BNFL, ICI and Sanofi-Aventis, before joining Anachem Ltd, in a commercial role within laboratory instrumentation in 1997. Progressing his international commercial career, Steve moved from technical sales to Sales and Marketing Manager, before becoming the General Manager for a1-Envirotech, gaining formal business management qualifications and awards along the way. Steve joined Lintec Testing Services Ltd, a subsidiary of Intertek, as Operations & Key Accounts Manager in 2007, before becoming General Manager of Lintec in 2011, then Director of Intertek ShipCare in June 2012, a role held until joining VPS.
