The shipbuilding industry stands at the brink of a technological revolution, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) poised to reshape every stage of ship design, construction, and operation. This lecture will explore how AI-driven tools, ranging from generative design algorithms and predictive maintenance systems to autonomous quality inspection and supply chain optimization, are redefining efficiency, safety, and sustainability in shipyards. We will examine emerging use cases, practical challenges, and the cultural shift required to integrate AI into traditional shipbuilding workflows. By drawing on real-world examples and future projections, the lecture will offer a vision of how AI can unlock unprecedented innovation and competitive advantage, ensuring that the shipbuilding industry not only keeps pace with technological change but steers confidently into the future.

Prof Rodrigo Pérez Fernández MSc MBA PhD CEng CMarEng FIMarEST FSNAME,
Director of Software Engineering, Siemens Digital Industries,
and Professor, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM)
Prof Pérez Fernández holds both PhD and MSc degrees in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. He has also completed an MBA, an MDSIC and several postgraduate programs in Shipbuilding, Maritime Transport and Executive Management. He is currently Senior Director for Software Engineering at Siemens Digital Industries Software. He previously worked at Siemens as Global Portfolio Development Director. Combining his activity in the industry, he is also a Professor in the Higher Technical School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). He has published several books and written more than two hundred technical papers about marine and ocean engineering. He is member of the Committee on Education in Engineering (CEIE) of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) and President of the Spanish Association of Marine Engineers (Madrid Branch).
