Covid-19: The Effects of the Global Pandemic on Seafarers

Description

Registration will close end of the day on June 6

To those of us engaged in the shipping industry, the status of seafarers as key workers is not in question. But while many of us settled into a new routine of home-based working as countries went into lockdown, seafarers continued to deliver food, fuel and medicines under conditions of increasing difficulty. At one point some 400,000 seafarers were captive on their ships, unable to get home as countries closed their borders. This presentation will examine why the work of seafarers is so indispensable, the hardships they encountered, how the international legal regime failed them and what lessons must be learned.
