There have been many people, over the last 400 years who have enabled the development of shipbuilding in Spain. Some as navy officers, and others as scientists and engineers, have worked to improve the knowledge and methodology of marine science.

The history of Spain has been decisively linked to marine engineering, their ships and men, back to the 15th century, when they undertook the exploration beyond the world known. At that time, it was necessary to make available charts and navigation tools and enhance ships as well, leading to the development of industries such as logging, rope factories, rigging and sails, and tar. Ports and dockyards were also built. Shipbuilders, officers, sailors, gunners and other dockyard personnel were trained. Primarily military were in charge of maintaining the machinery which was more sophisticated and complex during that time. The main architect of the efforts made in the reorganization of the naval forces was Jose Patiño, who, in 1717, gathered in his figure, the titles of General Intendent of the Spanish Navy and Army; President of the Contracting Tribunal of the Indies and, subsequently, Secretary of the Navy and Indies.

By the time this paper is read, many facts would be discovered from some of the (most relevant) stakeholders, besides the aforementioned Patiño, who made possible the achievement of a superb Armada (the Spanish Navy). From the creation of the Spanish Navy Corps of Engineers (1770), the beginning of the studies of marine engineering, and the creation of the Spanish Academy of Naval Engineers (1772), to the creation of the Special School for Marine Engineers, which held a first promotion graduation in 1939.

For those who miss any particular name in the list, simply saying that all who are here do matter, but not all who matter are here.
