8th Annual Western Europe Symposium

The Western Europe Section's 8th Annual Symposium was held on Friday 13th October 2017 at ABS London.

The event consisted of 6 presentations from Industry and Academia on the topical theme of "Reducing environmental impact".

SNAME Introduction Day at Southampton University

The "SNAME Introduction Day" at Southampton University, United Kingdom, was attended by Keith W. Hutchinson (T & R Chair / Paper Chair, WES), Dr. Gabriel David Weymouth, Dr. Jon J. Downes, Nina Lilley (Chair, WES), Keith Lilley (Vice-Chair / Membership Chair, WES) and PhD students of the university. The benefits of membership, T & R and Paper Contest were discussed during the event.

Keith W. Hutchinson, Babcock Energy and Marine Technology, conducted a presentation entitled "Status, Drivers, Challenges and Solutions for Floating LNG" (photo on the left).

Nicholas Copsey, Lucy Lowe and Kate Devereaux received a Certificate of Appreciation and WES mug for presenting their project entitled "Flapping Foils for Marine Propulsion" under the direction of Dr. Gabriel David Weymouth, Associate Professor of Southampton University (far right, photo on the right).

Fredrik Haag of IMO was presented a Certificate of Appreciation for his presentation entitled "Ocean Matters Matter - IMO's Work in the Wider Ocean's Governance Context".

There is growing concern and awareness about the state of the ocean due to ocean acidification, overfishing and marine litter, which are contributing to the degradation of the health of the seas surrounding us. With a growing population, finite resources and a high dependence on the marine environment for food, recreation and transportation the state of the ocean should matter to us all.

The Student Section of the University of Strathclyde together with the parent Section (WES) arranged an afternoon of presentations at the university:

  - "Status, Design Drivers, Challenges and Solutions for Floating LNG" by David C. Dobson & Keith W. Hutchinson, Babcock Energy and Marine Technology

  - "Maintenance and Reliability Assessment for Increased Safety and Energy Efficiency" by Michail Cheliotis, University of Strathclyde

  - "Dynamic Probabilistic Risk and Reliability Assessment for Ship Machinery" by Konstantinos Dikis, University of Strathclyde

  - "United Kingdom's First LNG ROPAX Ferry: The Design Challenges" by Neil Ferguson, Houlder Co. Ltd.

There were 45 attendees at the event. Additional presentations were given on SNAME Membership Benefits, T&R Programs and Opportunities, and the SNAME WES YP Paper Contest 2017.

The SNAME WES Chair Nina Lilley and Vice-Chair Keith Lilley were invited to attend the inaugural STI-NAMEI Student Section full day Symposium.

The day started with a procession and anthem. The following presentations were given:

  • "Requirements for Vessels Operating in Low Temperature Environment" by Keith Lilley, Vice-Chair, SNAME WES
  • "Boat Design for Military Application" by Jojo B. Nery, Director and Owner, Ocean Protecta Inc.
  • "Technical Evaluation of a Ship: A Naval Architect's Perspective" by Capt. Tomas D. Baino, PN (Ret.)
  • "Floating Drydock Design" by Crizel Sigua, Cezar Orozco & Paolo Aguila, NAMEI students

The students also participated in a Design Competition during the afternoon, an event that was very popular and enjoyed by all. The students also arranged two breakout sessions of dancing and festivities.

The Symposium was attended by 70 students and local professionals.

SNAME Maritime Convention 2016 at Seattle, Washington, USA

All the SNAME Section Chairs were formed in groups composing of section chairs and regional vice presidents to create a skit on membership. It was presented at the executive meeting and at the President’s Luncheon (Joe Comer).

The members of the skit are: Jeom Paik (Sr. Regional Vice-President) not in photo, Nina Lilley (Chair, SNAME WES), Keith Lilley (Vice-Chair and Membership Chair, SNAME WES), Jason Tan (Strathclyde University Student Section member), Alan Lim (Strathclyde University Student Section member) and Rayan Bou Chahine (Strathclyde University Student Section member). The skit was a success, thanks to Rich Mueller (Membership Committee Chair) and Rick Preston (CEO of Preston Productions, Inc.).

The Western Europe Section held its Annual Symposium consisting of four professional presentations and two student presentations. The student presentations were from the prize winners of the inaugural SNAME WES Paper Contest.

    • "IMO's Global Projects to Address Greenhouse Emissions from the Maritime Sector" by Dr. Jose Matheical, IMO

    • "Transportation of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) By Sea and the Design of LNG Carriers" by David C. Dobson & Keith W. Hutchinson, Babcock Energy and Marine Technology

    • "The Role of Project Management During the Concept Design Phase with Particular Reference to Marine Projects" by Ian G. Ridley, University of Sunderland

    • "Towable TLP Solutions for Offshore Wind" (Paper Contest 1st Prize) by Jacobo B. Arevalo Fuentes & Rafael d'Amore Domenech, Technical University of Madrid

    • "Amphibious Assault and Amphibious Training Ship Class: Landing Helicopter Assault & Training (LAHAT)" (Paper Contest 2nd Prize) by Akshay Bhatt, Andrew Cooper, James Harris & Gabriella Hartle, University College London

    The Symposium attracted 62 attendees, with students attending from the UK, The Netherlands and The Philippines.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    The 1st prize winners joined the SNAME WES officers and committee members at the dinner after the Symposium.

    Following the successful Symposium on the previous day, the Young Professionals hosted an event at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, London. The event was open to all and was attended by 36 people. This event gave an excellent networking opportunity whilst touring the world-famous museum. Some attendees also took the opportunity to stroll up to the Greenwich Observatory.
