    PRESENTATION ABSTRACT

Automation is becoming an essential part of modern shipbuilding, particularly in plate fabrication where consistency and accuracy are critical. This presentation begins with an overview of shipyard automation and examples from Seaspan’s production environment. It then introduces general engineering considerations in selecting CNC machinery for heavy-plate processing, including the fundamentals of metal cutting and how cutting forces influence machine capabilities. The session concludes with a case study on the newly installed PEMA edge-milling system at Vancouver Shipyards, highlighting its integration into the panel line and its role in producing consistent edge geometry required for automated welding processes.

    SPEAKER/PRESENTER
    Amirali Ahmadian, Outfit Engineer

Amirali Ahmadian is an Outfit Engineer at Vancouver Shipyards supporting the Joint Support Ship (JSS) program. He began his shipbuilding career in 2020 after transitioning from the aerospace industry and has since been involved in both the design and construction phases of new-build vessels. Amirali holds a MASc in Mechanical Engineering with a focus in Advanced Manufacturing from the University of Victoria, Canada, and a BASc in Mechanical Engineering from the Iran University of Science and Technology.
