The MV Midnight Sun has been converted and is operating with gas as a fuel. The sister vessel MV North Star is currently undergoing conversion work at Victoria Shipyards so it can operate with gas as a fuel.

On February 1st, 2022, the industrial work required to convert the TOTE Services vessel the MV Midnight Sun to use natural gas as a fuel was completed and on November 15th, 2022, TOTE Services completed commissioning the vessel to operate on gas. To date this is the largest vessel in North America to undergo an LNG conversion. The Orca Class Vessels are 255m long, can carry 600 FEU, and 220 autos and provide an essential service to the state of Alaska.

The conversion of Midnight Sun was a complex project that had work being coordinated between 20 companies located in 8 countries spanning 3 continents. Victoria Shipyards executed work over a twelve week and eight-week shipyard work period installing three structural units totaling 500 metric tonnes, two 1100m³ LNG tanks, 5km of piping, 53km of cable and 4000 individual items.

The presentation will describe the roles of the key participants, the approach to the work, and the project challenges/successes.
