Join SNAME Canadian Atlantic Section on April 3rd to learn more about User-centered design by Steven Mallam at the Marine Institute (MI) Conference Center.
Abstract
This presentation will provide an overview of why and how a human-centred approach in design adds value and improves outcomes in product and system development. Specifically, applying Human Factors approaches in the design and development of complex, safety-critical equipment and systems can increase safety, efficiency and usability once in operation. This talk will detail specific methods and case studies in the maritime domain where equipment and structures have utilized Human Factors implementation throughout design and evaluation phases, illustrating lessons learned, continued gaps and ways forward. Furthermore, several ongoing collaborative industry-academia R&D projects will be presented which the Marine Institute is currently engaged in related to human-centred design processes in maritime contexts.

SPEAKER/PRESENTER
Steven Mallam, Human Factors Researcher and Academic Director, Fisheries and Marine Institute, Memorial University of Newfoundland
Steven also serves as Adjunct Associate Professor with the University of South-Eastern Norway and lab member of the Ocean Industries Concept Lab at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. Steven’s research focuses on the analysis and optimization of complex socio-technical systems, primarily in maritime settings. Particularly, he is interested in enhancing individuals and teams through organizational strategies, training and design solutions. Steven received a PhD in Human Factors in 2016 from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.
