Abstract:  Arctic Cargo will draw on material collected by Christopher Wright in researching and writing a book about marine transportation in Canada's Arctic. This is an area that has been sorely neglected in histories of the North. It will start with Martin Frobisher's "gold mine" on Baffin Island in 1576, look at activities of the fur companies, police and missionaries, the collapse of the whaling industry; the machinations behind Canada's Arctic port; community re-supply and mining, wrapping up in the present day.
