February 27 2020

On its fifth meeting for the 2019-2020 season where Athena Kanellatou, (Operations Director MED MEA and India of MacGregor), Mary Pothitos (Paralegal Maritime Services Maritime Claims Consultant and DNV-GL Academy Trainer for Marine Insurance and Claims), and Stefanos Spiriounis (Sales Engineer MacGregor Greece Ltd.), spoke about the history present and future of MacGregor.

Almost a century ago, MacGregor Brothers were the first to design metallic hatch covers, aiming at safer operations at sea for the crew, the cargo and the vessel. Proper use and maintenance of cargo handling systems mean a competitive advantage to the vessel. Cargo damage on bulk carriers is a recurring problem. Vessels operate in a harsh environment. Poor maintenance of hatch covers may cause leakage, damage and hazard to the ship and the crew. In this presentation, we identify the main causes of wet damage and share loss prevention advice on how to prevent wet damage from occurring to the vessels. We focus on cargo claims statistics for wet damage claims relating to bulk carriers. We highlight the most common issues that contribute to these figures. This presentation is to raise awareness, to communicate and collaborate, to properly maintain the systems on board vessels.
