Join the Hampton Roads Section for our December Section meeting on Destriero.
Description: Three decades later after her 1992 tour, Destriero still holds the Virgin Atlantic Challenge trophy for the fastest one-way Atlantic crossing and the Columbus Atlantic Trophy for the fastest round-trip Atlantic Crossing. In 1992, Destriero left Ambrose Light off New York on 6th August and covered the 3,000 oceanic miles to the Bishop Rock lighthouse in England’s Scilly Isles in 58 hours, 34 minutes and 50 seconds at an average speed of 53.09 knots (98.323 km/h). The record previously held by the British Hoverspeed catamaran was 3 days, 7 hours and 54 minutes at an average speed of 36.6 knots. Destriero was a 67-metre (220 ft) long, 13-metre (43 ft) wide, 400-ton displacement, yacht designed by Donald Blount and built by Fincantieri in their Muggiano yard at La Spezia in 1991. The crew of 12 made history and inspire speed in shipbuilding today.
