Hydrodynamically supported craft operating at planing speeds generate spray from the bottom shell, separating at the chines. The dense main spray blister generated by the main hull must be accounted for in seaplane design as it may impact and damage components during takeoff and landing. 

Kate will discuss the results acquired during experimental tow tank testing of two forebody chine shape alternatives at the Stevens Institute of Technology’s Davidson Laboratory in calm and rough water. The results consider each model’s impact on the spray envelope, hydrodynamic drag, longitudinal stability, seakeeping motions, and seakeeping accelerations. The investigation presented the tradeoffs observed between spray patterns resulting from different mitigation approaches and the resultant craft performance. 

Kate Killian is a naval architect at DLBA Naval Architects, where she has been working since earning her B.Eng. in Engineering (concentration in Naval Engineering) from Stevens Institute of Technology in 2023. During her time at DLBA, she has been heavily involved in several model test events, including the DARPA Liberty Lifter project. Kate has spent several weeks serving as an on-site representative for DLBA during tow tank testing at Davidson Laboratory. During her time at Stevens, Kate spent four years working as an undergraduate laboratory assistant at Davidson Lab, gaining valuable hands-on experience in scale model testing of high-speed craft.
