The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers has published the technical and Research Bulletin A Guide to Materials Engineering for the Maritime Industry. This T&R bulletin was written by Yvonne Traynham and approved by SNAME Technical & Research Committee on Hull Structure Chaired by Roger Basu.
This document provides a unique and practical guide to materials engineering for those in the maritime industry. It covers aspects of materials engineering, testing and evaluation, corrosion, and failure that are of specific interest to marine designers as well as those who maintain structure and machinery in the marine environment. The guide also provides information on non-destructive test and evaluation techniques and their use and addresses advance materials and processes. Additional references are provided to assist those who require more detailed information on a specific process.
This bulletin started as a presentation at a local section meeting and those present encouraged the author to develop the materials as a bulletin. Hull Structure Committee member Naresh Maniar suggested the proposal as a T& R project. Envisioned as an 80 page document the resulting text grew to over 200 pages. The reader will find this reference guide chock full of useful information, tables, illustrations, and references all geared for practical use in the marine industries.
The new publication is identified as Technical and Research Bulletin 2-34. It is a 213 page report issued electronically and may be ordered for $40 ($20 for SNAME members) through the SNAME web site (http://www.sname.org/communities1/resources/viewtechnicalpaper/?DocumentKey=12596716-cb13-4bcf-8da7-ccaaa7fd1509) or by contacting Kristin Walker at kwalker@sname.org or (703) 997-6710.
