Abstract:

This presentation will explore key lessons learned from the recent government-led new build project. Topics will cover shore-based infrastructure, the challenges of integrating new vessels, maintenance planning, crewing issues, and project management. Additionally, we will look ahead at the integration of new technologies. The focus will be on operational aspects rather than technical details, aiming to spark discussions on elements often overlooked in vessel design and construction.

Colin is a graduate of the Nautical Science program at the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. He sailed up to senior navigation officer on various vessels including shuttle tankers, cargo ships, tugs, and passenger vessels before transiting to shore-based roles. For the past 10 years has held various vessel and safety management roles in Ontario and Eastern Canada in both government and private organizations. Currently serving as the Regional Operations Manager for the province of Marine Services for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Colin is responsible for the operational management of the intra-provincial ferry fleet including both owned and contracted vessels.


Marine Services – Department of Transportation and Infrastructure

Transportation and Infrastructure (TI) is responsible for construction and maintenance of the provincial highways; provision of the provincial ferry services; management of the Provincial Government fleet of light vehicles and heavy equipment; operation and maintenance of the Provincial Government air ambulances and water bombers and construction and management of Provincial Government buildings.

The Marine Services Division is responsible for the provision, maintenance, and management of provincial ferry vessels servicing 38 access points throughout the province. The division provides an essential transportation service to residents of remote and isolated communities. The fleet includes eight provincially-owned and operated vessels, and seven privately owned contracted vessels. Marine services transports approximately 730,000 passengers, 400,000 vehicles, and 13,000 tonnes of freight annually. The division is also responsible for the provision of vessel modification and refits of provincially-owned vessels.
