🚢Quantitative Mitigation of URN in Harbor Tug Design and Operation - IN-PERSON EVENT
🗓️ When: Thursday, October 16, 2025 from 05:00 PM to 09:30 PM (PT)
🌐 Hosted by: SNAME Canadian Pacific Section

    PRESENTATION ABSTRACT

Harbour and escort tugs contribute to the URN emissions in and around ports, both in British Columbia and globally. Robert Allan Ltd. conducted an extensive URN measurement program onboard diesel-mechanical and battery-electric azimuthing stern drive (ASD) modern escort and harbour tugs. The underwater noise and onboard vibration measurements were integrated into an in-house URN prediction model developed specifically for tugs, named TugEm (short for Tug Emissions), to support URN predictions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element analysis (FEA) and statistical energy analysis (SEA) were leveraged to enable URN prediction in TugEM, supporting quiet tug design and noise reduction efforts.
