Marios Chalaris, Undergraduate Student, University of West Attica, and Pavlos Karagiannidis, Fleet Performance Manager, GreenSteam, will make presentations on the topics of “Ammonia: Decarbonizing the Future” and “A Case Study of Speed Optimization with Machine-Learning Models and Live-trial Validation.”

Regarding the SOx and NOx emissions, IMO imposes regulations which tend to limit emissions from ships and to lead to a decarbonized environment. The future of carbon-free society relies on the production of new alternative energy sources. The maritime sector is currently in a transitional period as it moves from diesel to other alternative energy sources. Ammonia, as an alternative fuel, can play a significant role in decarbonizing the world’s energy supply and is considered one of the most promising zero-carbon fuels. The first presentation aims to examine the pros and cons of ammonia utilisation, but also the life cycle of emissions.
The second presentation analyses the speed optimization mechanism and the potential benefits (financial, environmental, commercial) for ship-owners and charterers through a case study of a tanker vessel following speed optimization advice in real-time. A Machine Learning (ML) model of the ship is exploited by a speed optimization algorithm in order to achieve the highest possible accuracy in this complex computational problem. The actual voyage values are compared to the ML model predictions and, to the “classical” approach of semi-empirical (physical) modelling.
Marios Chalaris was born in Athens, Greece where he also lives. Currently, he is undergoing undergraduate studies in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering at the University of West Attica. He serves as the Chairperson of SNAME UNIWA Student Section for the second consecutive year. He is attracted to 3d modelling, marine surveys field and decarbonization solutions.
Pavlos Karagiannidis graduated from the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of NTUA in 2019. During his studies he was actively engaged in the Greek Section of SNAME NTUA and the research team Oceanos NTUA. Over the last three years he combines research about data-driven ship propulsion modelling with applied work on the field of ship performance monitoring. Has held the positions of PMS Administrator and Performance Engineer in a major Greek shipping company and is currently holding the position of Fleet Performance Manager for GreenSteam. Also, his work on the field of Performance Monitoring has been presented in conferences and published in scientific journals.
