  • The Orcelle – Towards Wind-Powered Ships for Deep Sea Cargo Transport - iN-PERSON EVENT

    Feb 26, 07:00 PM - 09:00 PM (GR)
EVENT DESCRIPTION International regulations on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as well as strong market demand for zero-emission transport calls for a radical change in the shipping industry. Measures such as hull form optimization, use of alternative fuels and efficient machinery systems, new coatings, and smart routing have already improved the energy efficiency of the world fleet. However, it is far from enough. To effectively respond to the climate challenges, we must turn to emission-free energy sources. One such promising and well-proven zero-emission propulsion system for shipping is wind propulsion. With the goal of demonstrating that even higher energy and emission reductions are feasible, 11 representatives of the European maritime industry and research community, including NTUA, have joined forces in the large-scale EU-funded project ORCELLE (2022-2027), led by Wallenius Wilhelmsen Ocean (https: //orcelle.eu/) , aiming at developing and building an innovative 7,000 cars PCC carrier with wind as main propulsion source. The presentation will outline the project’s work that also includes applications to other shipping segments (tankers and bulk carriers). SPEAKER/PRESENTER Professor Apostolos Papanikolaou National Technical University Athens (NTUA) FSNAME, FRINA, FJSNAOE Prof. Dr. -Ing. Habil. Apostolos D. Papanikolaou is em. Professor of the National Technical University of Athens. He studied Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the Technical University of Berlin. He headed more than 80 funded research projects and was author/co-author of over 700 scientific publications dealing with the design and optimization of conventional and unconventional vessels, the hydrodynamics analysis of ships in calm water and in seaways, the logistics-based ship design, the stability and safety of ships and regulatory developments regarding maritime safety at IMO. He received various international prize awards for his research work, among them the RINA Safer Ship award in 1999, the Lloyds List 2009 Greek Shipping award on Technical Innovation, the prestigious Dr. K.Davidson medal/award of SNAME for outstanding achievement in ship research in 2010. He was also recipient twice of the European Champions Award for Senior Researchers in Waterborne Transport in 2014 (Paris) and 2024(Dublin). He is Fellow and former Int. Vice-President of SNAME (USA), Fellow of RINA (UK), STG (Germany) and Distinguished Foreign Fellow of JASNAOE (Japan). #In-PersonEvent
