‘‘Fuel Regulations and the Environment - SOx
Emission Control and Quality of Marine Fuels ISO
8217:2010’’

Report by John Kokarakis

On April 14th, 2011, in the presence of some 60 persons, we had
our seventh technical meeting for the 2010-2011season, during
which Ms. Maria Kyratsoudi, Specialist of Hellenic Lloyd's
S.A., analyzed the subject of the newly unveiled (2010)
ISO 8217 Voluntary Fuel Quality Standard as well as the
implications of the MARPOL regulations on the mitigation
of the SOx emissions from marine fuels. Her presentation
was titled: ‘‘Fuel Regulations and the Environment - SOx
Emission Control and Quality of Marine Fuels ISO 8217:2010’’.
The perennially interesting topic of ISO Standards on marine
fuels as well as the new directives on the SOx emissions were
thoroughly analyzed by the speaker. The presentation was
marked by a very lively question and answer session with an
interesting exchange of ideas and comments.

The meeting was concluded with a nice reception. It was
also remarkable that the Chairman of the Section Mr. Petros
Lalangas was not present for first time after nine years of
technical presentations in our Section. Petros had to undergo
surgery and it was impossible to be present. We wish him a
speedy recovery.
