GREEK   SECTION:   REPORT ON THE APRIL 24th, 2014 TECHNICAL MEETING

Topic: “Measures to Improve the Fuel Efficiency of New and Existing Vessels” by Dr. Jan de Kat (ABS)

Report by Prof. Apostolos Papanikolaou

On April 24th, 2014, in the week after Easter, the Greek Section had its 8th technical meeting for the 2013-2014 season. In the presence of a good audience of 24 members and 13 non-members, internationally well known Dr. Jan de Kat, Director of Energy Efficiency at the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Denmark, delivered a most interesting presentation on recent technological developments and design as well as operational measures to improve ship’s fuel efficiency.

For new and existing vessels there is a strong focus on energy efficiency due to high fuel cost and stricter regulations. The situation is compounded by overcapacity in certain segments of the shipping industry. This has caused an increased focus from ship owners, shipyards, equipment suppliers and investors on technical optimization and innovation. The presentation addressed how this situation influences the ship design process: the contracts between ship owners and ship yards are evolving, model tests and CFD predictions are more important than ever and charter party contracts become stricter. The presentation also touched upon issues related to technical management and commercial operation of vessels, which are also changing due to the higher focus on fuel costs. The role of performance monitoring and performance management and the knowledge from various technical disciplines are used to improve the energy efficiency of the vessels in service and to provide feedback into the ship design process.

Main discussion points focused on the weaknesses of the EEDI/EEOI indices, when assessing ship’s efficiency and on difficulties in the projection of model test results of speed/powering to full scale. The presentation of Dr. de Kat is available at the Greek section’s local web site (http://www.sname.org/GreekSection/).

The meeting was concluded with the traditional reception of the local section for the meeting guests in an adjacent hall of the MARAN Tankers Management building.
