October 2024

The evening event for October 2024 was concluded, where:

Dr. Chara Georgopoulou, Head Maritime R&D and Advisory Greece, OCC Manager DNV

made a presentation on the topic of:

“Vessel Lifetime Extension & Decarbonization Planning ”

Presentation Summary:

The shipping industry faces key challenges in ensuring the sustainable development of fleets, in a complex landscape of increasing regulatory pressure and digital transformation:

-      Regulatory uncertainty and economic pressure: Evolving global regulations make it difficult to plan long-term fleet investments, while the thin profit margins make companies hesitant to invest in decarbonization technologies

-      New technologies and fuels: Operators often delay adopting new technologies due to costs or operational disruption. Furthermore, upgrading fleets for decarbonization is expensive and technically complex. Shifting to alternative fuels requires substantial changes to ship infrastructure and fuel supply chains.

As the capacity to digitally monitor, quantify and validate energy efficiency and asset integrity is becoming an important factor of business differentiation, this presentation focuses on how expertise and digital tools can be combined to analyze vessel lifetime extension and decarbonization planning, to fill in gaps in managing these challenges.
