Meeting Report on Environmental Regulatory Update presented by Mr. Stamatis Fradelos, Senior Principal Engineer in the Operational & Environmental Performance (OEP) department of ABS Global Marine at the Greek Section’s Technical Meeting on 29 September 2016

 

During the Greek Section’s first technical meeting for the 2016-2017season on 29 September 2016 Stamatis Fradelos, Senior Principal Engineer in the Operational & Environmental Performance (OEP) department of ABS Global Marine, made a presentation on the latest environmental regulatory developments.

Mr. Fradelos commenced his presentation by setting the framework of latest developments both at international and regional level. He made reference to the forthcoming MEPC 70 where important issues such as Ballast Water Management, Ships Recycling, Air, Sox and CO2 Emissions are to be discussed, while emphasis is anticipated to be put on the proposed IMO data collection system vs. the EU MRV Regulation and the draft delegated and implementing acts.

Each of the items was presented in detail by making reference to related issues such as USCG/EPA, BWMS scaling issues, IACS UR M74 installation requirements; Hong Kong Convention and EU Ship Recycling Regulation; NOx compliance technologies and proposal for designation of Baltic Sea as a NOx Emission control area; and assessment of implementation date of the 0.50% global sulfur limit.

A Q&A session succeeded the presentation, while during the post-meeting reception attendees had the chance to meet with representatives from all segments of maritime industry, discuss and share their ideas.

The meeting was attended by thirty-three (33) members including students and professionals and thirty-four (34) non-members.

The meeting was broadcast to members in Europe, Middle East and north America. More than 20 members attended it virtually.
