Meeting Report on Best Practices in the Operation of Ballast Water Treatment Systems presented by Mr. Stamatis Fradelos, Manager, Operational & Environmental Performance (OEP), Global Marine, ABS at the Greek Section’s Technical Meeting on September 14th, 2017.

During the Greek Section’s first technical meeting for the 2017-2018season on September 14th, 2017 Stamatis Fradelos, Manager, Operational & Environmental Performance (OEP), Global Marine, ABS, made a presentation on Best Practices in the Operation of Ballast Water Treatment Systems.

The presenter outlined the results of an extensive study led by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) on the challenges associated with operation of Ballast Water Treatment Systems (BWTS). He referred to example cases such as the frequent calibration of the sensors and other abnormalities, the costs associated with replacement of UV lamps, the complexity of the systems and the imperative need for crew training, clogging of the filters and subsequent reduction of water flow. The presenter brought into light that problems are usually aggravated due to occasional inadequate after-sale services from some vendors. In fact, he highlighted that over 40% of the systems installed are not operable or operate in a problematic way.

The presentation was concluded with an update of the latest BWM regulatory developments following and including MEPC 71 and USCG requirements.

A Q&A session succeeded the presentation, while during the post-meeting reception attendees had the chance to meet with representatives from all segments of maritime industry, discuss and share their ideas.

The meeting was attended by thirty-six (36) members and twenty-three (23) non-members.

The meeting was broadcast to SNAME members worldwide.
