Meeting Report on Global Sulphur Cap 2020 vs. Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reduction: Short vs. Long Term Challenges for Shipping and Safe, Efficient and Environmental Friendly Ship Operations by Fuel Management and SOx – Emissions Control presented by Dr. Christos Chryssakis and Martin Hees at the SNAME Greek Section’s monthly meeting on May 9th, 2019.

 

During the ninth section meeting for the 2018-2019season Dr. Christos Chryssakis, Business Development Manager at DNV GL - Maritime and Martin Hees, International Sales Manager at Aquametro Oil & Marine gave a presentation on Global Sulphur Cap 2020 vs. Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reduction: Short vs. Long Term Challenges for Shipping and Safe, Efficient and Environmental Friendly Ship Operations by Fuel Management and SOx – Emissions Control respectively.

Dr. Christos Chryssakis took the floor and during his presentation he did not only cover the latest developments related to the global sulphur cap, including expected implications for the industry, but he also discussed solutions for reaching the 2030 IMO target as well as the latest market trends in terms of alternative marine fuels uptake. 

Once completed, Martin Hees took the podium. He presented the new legislation for marine fuels on sulphur cap as well as the EU and IMO regulations for MRV, Ballast Water Management and others, and suggested ways that owners can explore to get their companies ready for these new challenges. He made a special reference to one of the most important challenges, the treatment of fuel, and he addressed the issues of cost, safety and sustainability.

A Q&A session succeeded each presentation.

The meeting was well-attended by representatives from all segments of the industry that had the chance to network at the post meeting reception.
