EVENT DESCRIPTION
Our own David Hansch will discuss the loss of HMS Thetis and the lessons that can be learned from it. HMS Thetis sank on sea trials in Liverpool Bay, England on 1 June 1939. Like many disasters involving man’s engineering, numerous seemingly small failures contributing to the sinking and subsequent loss of life of the overwhelming portion of the crew. Upon their return to submarine construction in the late 50’s, Newport News Shipbuilding used this event as a teaching moment for its employees with an article in the Shipyard Bulletin and an entire issue of the Supervisor’s News Bulletin. David will discuss the Thetis’s loss as well as the lessons we can learn from it.
