Topic: Electrical Voith Schneider Propulsion (eVSP) - The Efficient and Safe Thruster
Abstract: Efficient Dynamic Positioning (DP) requires a fast and safely reacting propulsion system. The Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) has proven itself for decades as a safe maneuvering device for DP vessels. Currently, Voith is taking the VSP one step further and is introducing the electric Voith Schneider Propeller (eVSP) to the market.
This opens a new option for Dynamic Positioning. In addition to the fast control according to an XY-logic of the VSP, the RPM can also be changed extremely quickly now. This is made possible by the fact that a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) directly drives the thrust-generating blades. This new technology renders gear boxes now obsolete, which has a very positive effect on efficiency and maintenance costs.
In April and May 2022, the sea trails of the first DP vessel (a Service Operation Vessel) with the eVSP were successfully completed. These results will also be presented.
SPEAKER/PRESENTER

NY MET SPECIAL FUNDING PROGRAM
We would like to thank all generous contributors for your past support of the New York Metropolitan Section Special Funding Appeal for past SNAME seasons.
Our appeal for your generous support is especially urgent at this time as we face an increasing need to reach out to the New York Metro community at large regarding SNAME and the maritime industry as well as to keep meeting prices in check in the face of rising costs.
To make a Special Fund donation, please contact our Section Chair, Anthony Nigro. We on the NY Met Section Leadership Committee thank you in advance for your thoughtful consideration of this request.
You can send your contribution check by Mail to:
