JANUARY JOINT SOCIETY MEETING SNAME/IMarEST/ASNE/SMPE hosted by SMPE

EVENT DESCRIPTION

TOPIC

"Ya Caan Get Theyah From Heyah!" Fast-tracking Redevelopment of US Inland and Coastal Marine Packet Freight / Passenger Services

ABSTRACT

The US Marine Highways program at the federal level and current initiatives such as the Blue Highways RFEI put out by the NYC EDC are positive steps towards reestablishing long-dormant US inland and coastal marine shipping services.

The paper presents how re-establishment of freight / passenger packet service on the Hudson River is being pursued within the context of existing and anticipated governmental stimulants. It is a current, real initiative, not history or conjecture.

The paper is divided into five sections that the authors believe form a useful framework for similar initiatives: 1) Market identification, 2) Vessel design, 3) Proforma economics, 4) Project Finance, 5) Where it all can lead.

By sharing their own experiences, the authors hope the paper can assist domestic marine shipping operators and entrepreneurs develop successful new enterprises and that the paper will assist US shipyards charged with the task of building tomorrow. Through collaboration, once profitable marine shipping trades on all four US coasts can be recreated using better, cleaner, more versatile tonnage than was available to our forebears. And in the process, return marine shipping services to America’s coastal and inland waterways that brought joy to the eyes and heart of all who loved watching ships do what ships do.

PRESENTER

Geoff Uttmark MM, MSc, BScGeoff earned a BSc from the University of Michigan where he studied NAME and Economics. Twenty years later he graduated from City, University of London, with MSc in Shipping, Trade & Finance. He earned a 200 ton near-coastal USCG Master Mariner’s license, six renewals, via the hawse pipe.

Geoff started his professional career as naval architect at Sparkman & Stephens where he was happiest when they sent him to shipyards. Taking a cue from that, he moved to Sun Ship where he was Naval Architect / Transportation Analyst in the General Cargo Ship product group. Geoff believes he is the last surviving member of the task force that created Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE), which is today the dominant carrier in the Alaska trade.

Geoff believed the Sun Ship model of Shipyard ship ownership had broader application, so he formed TransTech Marine Co. in 1980 to pursue / lead / support creation of new marine shipping enterprises. In 2005 he formed ShipShares LLC to advise / assist capital formation for progressive marine shipping projects.

In case any of the above has wandered into potentially haughty waters, Geoff notes that none of what he has done so far has worked exactly as planned. However, it has worked well enough to get us to tonight where he will talk about his latest initiative, Marine Bluways, Corp.

MBC is Geoff’s last hurrah, but he is ever the optimist when it comes to US shipbuilding and American marine shipping… maybe Marine Bluways Corp. will prove “Third Time’s the Charm”. Geoff hopes that maybe sparking a renaissance will make a worthy contribution to the industry he has known and loved for more than half a century. This presentation is expected to be accredited for 1 PDH. To obtain PDH credit, participants must attend the meeting and submit a completed Learning Assessment and Application Form directly to SNAME.
