Abstract: Regular and thorough inspections of waterfront structures and shorelines are key for any owner wishing to maximize their property’s utility and lifespan. That same level of due diligence is required during the design and construction phases of structural repair and replacement projects. Construction documents must accurately portray the scope of work in sufficient detail for the finished product to achieve the owner’s intent, for regulatory agencies to issue work permits, and to minimize contractor disputes during construction.
Urban waterfront properties typical to New York Harbor are uniquely difficult to inspect due to limited access, hazardous and unpredictable environmental conditions, and complicated property rights. These obstacles combine to jeopardize the safe and efficient performance of inspections by unprepared parties.
To overcome these obstacles, McLaren Engineering, a multidisciplinary engineering services firm located in New York City, deploys remote collection devices to complement, expedite, and enhance inspections by its dive and survey teams. These devices, including remote-operated submersible vehicles, aerial drones, and surface vessels, promote safety and increase the quality of inspection and survey deliverables.
