OCTOBER JOINT SOCIETY MEETING

SNAME/IMarEST/ASNE/SMPE hosted by SNAME

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Please join us for the monthly New York Metro Section meeting! SNAME Executive Director, Liz Bouchard, will be in attendance!

Abstract:
Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASVs) offer significant advancements in maritime safety and efficiency, yet their successful deployment relies on rigorous testing and validation. This presentation examines the core challenges in proving ASV safety, particularly in collision avoidance. We explore the complexities of translating subjective COLREGs into algorithmic logic, managing the vast dimensionality of operational scenarios, and ensuring reliable perception in dynamic marine environments. Emphasis is placed on how a deep understanding of vessel hydrodynamics is critical for both autonomous decision-making and accurate simulation. We then discuss essential solutions, including advanced Test & Evaluation (T&E) methodologies, high-fidelity simulation, comprehensive coverage strategies, robust metrics, and the emerging considerations of liability. For Naval Architects, understanding these testing paradigms is crucial for designing and certifying safe, effective autonomous maritime platforms

This presentation is expected to be accredited for 1 PDH. To obtain PDH credit, participants must attend the meeting and submit a completed Learning Assessment and Application Form directly to SNAME.
