Key challenges relate to the type of loads experienced by the floaters supporting the wind turbine generators (WTGs) and their extremely large vertical dimensions. To date, there have been few comparable floating structures with equivalent properties. How to navigate these challenges and define the right strategy to develop innovative technology is a daunting but exciting task. Relying on known technology is desirable but should be carefully assessed as the specific characteristics of floating wind differ so much from conventional floater technology. Introducing radical new technology may aid a desirable solution but practical aspects such as availability and scalability should be considered. ECO TLP® will be one solution discussed within this framework for a full overview of the floater technology landscape.
