Bio

Fred Toh graduated in Dec 2009 with MSME (Ocean Engineering) at University of California, Berkeley. He received his Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification in Jan 2011. He is working towards becoming a licensed Professional Engineer by 2017-18.

Professionally, Fred has lots of experience in project/systems engineering. He implemented several green innovation projects and brought in cost-savings and other operational benefits to the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN). As his passion for marine design continues to grow, he is also developing strong interests in computer technology. He sees the growing importance of using computer applications in all sectors of the maritime industry. Fred graciously hopes he could contribute to the maritime industry with his skills, knowledge and passion.

Fred is born in Singapore, one of the busiest maritime hubs around the world. His love for the sea began since young. In 1998, he was awarded a scholarship by the RSN. He decided to study Naval Architecture at University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, so that he could further develop his passion academically. While in Newcastle, he discovered the joy of recreational sailing through his good friend and course-mate, Jono Brown. Fred would join Jono and the other dedicated sailors at Tynemouth Sailing Club on Saturday mornings and braved through the cold waters of River Tyne. When Fred returned to Singapore in 2002 to carry out his national service in the navy, his love for sea activities did not stop growing. Progressively, he attained proficiency certifications/licenses in Laser, J/24, power-boating and PADI Advanced Open Water Diver.

Besides the sea sports, Fred likes puzzles and music. During his spare time, he likes to solve chess puzzles and logic puzzles. He also sings and serves as a church deacon at St. John's Presbyterian Church at Berkeley, California.

Fred loves seeing the world and experiencing many cultures, and he will love to exchange his travel stories with anyone. During his middle-school years, he traveled to Hawaii with his school choir for a choral competition, and Australia with his family. Then in high school/junior college, he had the opportunity to travel to US and Europe, again with his school choir to perform and to participate in another choral competition. He never seemed to stop traveling. During his naval (midshipman) training, he was able to visit pretty much half of Asia Pacific, including Japan, Korea, Taiwan and China. The next thing he knew, he was in the UK for undergraduate studies, and shortly after that, he carried out his naval service in Singapore, and once again, he returned to the US for graduate studies.
